External memory for mobile now

After reading this article, I find there is a greater need to bring back external storage options built in to our phones. More people are switching to their phones as main computing devices now.

It reminds me how desktops came with larger internal storage drives and if you bought a bigger case, you had the option to add one or two more disks. External storage became an option if you couldn’t install it in your desktop case. Laptops used to have very small storage options and the external storage disks helped those users save all their files.

We had no cloud options back then, giving the drive manufacturers more business, but that doesn’t mean we all have to use the cloud for storing our personal files today. There are users with limited internet home and mobile plans that cannot use the cloud for backups. External drives are still a great option. It’s not ideal with phones, some have different ports and speeds, it’s clunky carrying an adapter or cable and internal is such a clean option.

Of course, phone manufacturers won’t make this happen as long as cloud options are available and people pay up. Apple seems to be the company that every other brand eventually follows. Android phone companies used to boast all the extra features that differentiated them from Apple. Now, they copy them by removing all the extra features we loved. These new phones cost more and give us less. I can’t imagine a future where we would get features back and companies keep the same prices as today. The consumer loses in the end.
